Treloar hopes to take on Belconnen

The Greater Western Sydney GIANTS will be on a mission to reclaim their winning form against Belconnen at 2pm at Blacktown Olympic Park this Saturday, June 25.

The GIANTS were on a three match-winning streak before being stopped in their tracks by a fierce Sydney Swans unit last round.

Belconnen will be looking for their second win of the season after going down to Ainslie and Eastlake in the last fortnight.

Promising young AFL talent, Adam Treloar, may don the orange and charcoal on Saturday for the first time since he tore his hip in a match against the ACT Combined side in February. Treloar was a member of the 2010 AIS AFL Academy and starred in both the Under 16 and Under 18 AFL National Championships.

GIANTS reporter Beck Mills caught up with Treloar to find out how the team is preparing to take on Belconnen and what his rehab journey has been like over the last six months.

So, Adam, what are the chances that we’ll get to see you run out in the orange and charcoal on Saturday?

“If I get through our main training session on Wednesday I’ll be able to play on Saturday. At the moment there’s probably a 70 percent chance that I’ll be playing.”

How are you feeling about getting back out on the field?

“I’m really nervous and excited. I’ve been really cautious this week, I haven’t done much at all because I don’t want to hurt myself and I want to make sure that I’m ready for the game.”

What will the team focus be on Saturday?

“We were disappointing against Sydney last week. We didn’t stick to our team structures and rules.

“The team is really keen to go out there this week and show everyone that Sydney won’t just keep beating us.

“We’ll continue to work on our structures and improve each time we run out onto the ground so we can show everyone what kind of team we really are.”

Has it been difficult to watch your team from the sidelines for the entire NEAFL season so far?

“It hasn’t bothered me too much. I have been able to look on and see how much we’re improving as a team week in, week out.

The last time you played for the GIANTS was against the ACT combined side in February, what happened in that game?

“I pulled up pretty sore at half time in my groin and my hips. I had a tear in my left hip, which originally we thought would be a 3-4 week injury but ended up being much longer.”

What have you done in rehab over the last six months?

(Laughs) “I’ve done a lot of rehab. I’ve worked on my core, I’ve done weights, I’ve done a lot of bike riding, I’ve been swimming, I’ve done pilates, I’ve been going to bikram yoga to help make me more flexible and worked on my glutes.

“I’ve put on 6kg of muscle since I arrived so hopefully that will stop me from being pushed around and getting injured again.”

What caused the tear in your hip?

“The injury was because of overuse. I had been putting a lot of stress on my groins because they were compensating for my hips and I’d never done the right rehab for it.

What will you need to do to avoid being injured again?

“I can prevent it from happening. I just need to keep myself strong and do my rehab everyday.

“You also need to be smart about it, if you’re feeling sore, don’t go out and play golf or basketball. I learnt that the hard way when I rolled my ankle two weeks ago.

“It sounds weird to say but I’m glad that I was injured in February if it means that I’ll escape sitting on the sidelines for six months next year.”

What has the club done to help you through your injury?

“I’ve had access to fantastic physios and sports scientists. It’s nothing against the physios at home; I just didn’t get to see them as much.

“Our property manager Ady Schwegler is my best friend here. He’s helped me a lot, physically and mentally.

“Sam Darley has also helped me to stay really positive and keeps telling me that I’m a good player and I’ll find my feet again. I’ve got great support at home from mum and my girlfriend Kelsey as well.

“It’s not just those four though; it’s the whole club, it’s everyone at the GIANTS. Sheeds and Choco ask me how I’m going everyday and when I’ll be back on the track.

“Hopefully they won’t need to ask me again.”
