Reid’s a Rising Star
SYDNEY Swans forward Sam Reid has been named the Round 12 AFL Rising Star nominee.
The 19-year-old key forward was among the Swans best in the 10-point win over Richmond at the SCG on Sunday, taking three contested marks inside the forward-fifty and booting two goals.
Swans coach John Longmire said Sam was an exciting young player and a deserved Rising Star nominee.
“As a 19 year old in his second season of AFL football, Sam has been outstanding for us in our forward line.
“He is a fantastic athlete and a fierce competitor. One of the really pleasing aspects of his game is his follow up and pressure, which brings other players into the game,” Longmire said.
Longmire said Reid had undergone a shoulder operation in the offseason but had worked extremely hard on his rehabilitation to get himself ready for the start of the season.
The hardwork has paid off, with Reid playing all 11 games so far this season.
Standing at 195cm, Reid is ranked second overall at the Club for contested marks and is third on the Swans goal kicking list.
He was drafted to the Swans with selection 38 in the 2009 National Draft and made is AFL debut in round 22 last season against the Brisbane Lions.
Reid is the Club’s first Rising Star nominee since Dan Hannebery, who went on to claim to the overall Rising Star award in 2010.
Ironcially, Sam’s brother Ben who plays with Collingwood, was named a Rising Star nominee in round 12 last season.
