Rolling Rams squad announced for national wheelchair champs

One of the fastest growing wheelchair sports in the country, wheelchair AFL, is set to thrust its way into the mainstream sporting arena next week, thanks to the 2022 Toyota Wheelchair AFL National Championships which takes place from 21-25 November in Melbourne.

The event, hosted by Disability Sports Australia (DSA) in partnership with the AFL, gives Australia’s most talented wheelchair footballers the opportunity to represent their state/territory against the best in the country. In a major boost for the event and the sport, the tournament will be broadcast live on Kayo Freebies.

Congratulations to the 10 NSW/ACT Rolling Rams selected to represent our state and territory:

A new experience for a developing team

.

Coach of the Rolling Rams, Alessandro Sergi, was bullish about the chances of his relatively inexperienced side. “Some of our players are new to the sport,” he said. “But we have a tight knit group and that team chemistry will work on our advantage.

“We’ll definitely take some scalps in the tournament. And if we take some early, that will set us up for success… teams will take us seriously.”

Sergi has already seen improvement in the team across its two training sessions and expects them to improve further during the Lightning Round grading games.

“During our sessions in Canberra and Sydney, we already starting to move the ball faster up and down the court and begin to learn a more complicated system including leading, blocking and thinking two steps ahead, which is really nice from a coaching point of view.”

Squads could choose to take 7-10 players, and the Rolling Rams expect its squad of 10 to be important to manage fatigue in the busy tournament – each team will play at least 10 matches.

Among these players is Alison Carder from the Bankstown Training Hub. She will be one of the only women playing in the tournament and will be an inspiration for women and girls interested in learning more about wheelchair AFL.
