Independent Schools Competition 2015

The AFL NSW/ACT independent schools competition enters its third year on the back of two successful years, expanding to include 31 teams across 10 schools.

The competition provides opportunities for players of all skills and ages to participate in AFL, and the independent schools system has seen a number of elite players produced, including Lewis Roberts-Thompson (Shore) Dane Rampe and Jack Hiscox (Newington).

The Independent Schools competition will commence for 2015 in May, with fixtures attached.

A word from Simon Wilson, AFL NSW/ACT Sydney/Illawarra region general manager below.

“Welcome to all schools, players and parents to another exciting year of Independent Schools Football.

As we enter the third year of the program we will again witness significant growth with team numbers growing to include 31 different teams across ten schools. This is a remarkable achievement over three years and AFL NSW/ACT is extremely grateful to all who have supported the program to date.

This year will again be a year of firsts with the evolution of an Opens Program taking place. While this will primarily be a match program for 2015 with only a small number of schools involved, importantly for the credibility of the program, it completes the pathway and I am confident there will be a strong and vibrant opens competition in 2016 with other schools already indicating their intent to nominate teams for 2016.

Additionally, another exciting initiative allowed 24 boys, who played in the Year 9/10 Program last year, an opportunity to represent the Independent Schools AFL Program in a one off game against a touring team from New Zealand. This game, recently played at St Ignatius College was a wonderful experience for all involved and is something I am hopeful may eventuate into an annual event that provides something the boys can aspire to be involved in.

Along with numerous players before them, the 2014 AFL Draft saw another two boys added to AFL lists from Independent Schools in Sydney. Both Isaac Heeney (Waverley College) and Jack Hiscox (Newington) have represented the club this year in recent NAB Challenge games and join a long list of boys at the elite level vying for senior selection in the upcoming season.

I wish every team the best of luck for another great year of school football and thank you all for your continued support of this program, which continues to gain momentum.”
