2024 Girls Independent Schools Competition Grand Final preview

It’s been another bumper season in the Girls’ Independent Schools Competition, which has included extraordinary goals, high flying marks, nail biting finishes, and plenty of fun.

For many participants, the Independent Schools Girls competition is about fun and fitness, as well as making memories to last a lifetime. For others, it’s about extending themselves and their team mates to be the best they can be and, hopefully, clench some silverware at the season’s end.

Grand finals will be held this weekend, with girls vying to be crowned champion team and have bragging rights over other schools for the next 12 months.

Off-field highlights

The Independent Schools Girls competition has grown again for season 2024, with a 10 per cent increase in teams compared with 2023. Although it’s not just numbers growing, the skills and talent among the girls has also improved and will be on display for a North vs South representative game on Wednesday, 10 April

This season, all Division One games were filmed via Sportscast, which were then used to highlight the Top five plays of each round, which have been posted weekly on the AFL Sydney Juniors social media pages each week.

Grand final previews

The Opens Division 1 competition was close and a fight between four talented teams, with St Catherine’s, Barker, Loreto, and Pymble leading the way.

In the end, three teams were tied on points to get the final spot in the grand final based on percentage. St Catherine’s and Barker came out on top and will face off for the premiership.

In a testament to the tight competition across the board, half of the grand final spots were secured based on team percentage after the conclusion of Round 7.

Narrabeen Sports High will host all grand finals this weekend. Its synthetic surface will allow for matches following the predicted heavy rains.

North v South Representative Game

Following these Grand Finals, the second ever Independent Schools Representative Game will be played on the Wednesday, 10 April at Lionel Watts Oval, Frenchs Forest.

During this match, the best players from each school will compete against each other in a “North” vs “South” match. There is no doubt there will be plenty of interest from GIANTS and Sydney Swans Academy coaches to spot the next big talent.

North was too good in 2023’s inaugural event.
