Community Legend: Murray Lembit

Murray Lembit is the current AFL Canberra Junior Umpire Coach, playing a key role in the growth and development of AFL within the NSW/ACT region.

On any given weekend, Murray attends and watches more than 20 quarters of junior or senior football, assessing both experienced and up and coming umpires.

Murray provides constructive feedback to umpires at all levels of the game, equipping them with the skills and know-how to improve their individual performances.

Murray is also a familiar face at weeknight matches, where he braves the freezing Canberra conditions in order to check in with the umpires and monitor their games.

Furthermore, Murray participates in Umpire training sessions two times a week, in addition to mentoring all of the junior umpires from the region.

This season, Murray has begun holding club training sessions, educating playing groups about the rules of the game.

When he isn’t hosting training sessions or attending games, Murray works hard behind the scenes at planning and implementing junior coaching sessions, completing junior umpire appointments and overseeing the accreditation of junior umpires.

His commitment to his role was never more evident than when he took long service leave from his day job to attend the CHS Carnival in Sydney to be match day coach for 3 days.

Here we find a man who has an unwavering passion for AFL and an untiring commitment to upholding and promoting the highest standard of umpiring at all levels of the game.

There is no one more deserving than Murray to be this week’s Community Legend.

Each week during the regular season AFL NSW/ACT will identify and recognize a local Community Legend from one of our community Leagues.

Volunteers play a vital role within our game and without them community football simply doesn’t happen.

AFL NSW/ACT would like to thank all of our community volunteers for their ongoing commitment to our game.
