Sydney Uni into third straight NEAFL Prelim Final

Sydney University are through to the NEAFL Preliminary Finals after defeating the Aspley Hornets by 50-points.

In a tough encounter at Blacktown International Sportspark, the Students secured the win, which means they will now travel to Brisbane to face the Lions for a place in the Grand Final.

A tight first quarter saw both sides give their all, showcasing to the crowd what was to come for the next three quarters of football. The Students took an eight-point lead into the first break off the back of some silky ball movement.

Aspley fought back however, and even led by 11-points halfway through the second quarter. A handful of goals put the Students back in front as they went into the main break with an 18-point lead.

University kicked away in the second half, putting the Hornets to the sword as they kicked nine goals to four, to ram home their advantage.

The Students had an even share of the ball, with 18 of their 23 players reaching double figures for possessions. Zac O’Brien again led the way, as he kicked four goals and picked up 24 disposals to continue his good form of late.

James Brain had a good day in front of goal kicking three majors, while Louis Stevenson (22 disposals) and Tom Young (21 disposals) also saw a lot of the ball.

Sydney University travel to Brisbane to take on the Lions on Saturday, 2 September 2017 at 12pm with the venue to be confirmed.
