Young guns impress in Perth
NSW and the ACT’s up and coming AFL stars have returned home from Perth following the Australian Football Championships from July 25 to 31.
Fifteen teams travelled to Western Australia for the event as the two age groups, 15 years and 12 years, battled it out to be crowned the best football state.
Despite gallant efforts from the four NSW/ACT teams it was the ACT under 15 side that finished the carnival the best coming fourth overall. NSW, in the same age group, finished sixth after claiming two victories in the group stage.
In the end it was Western Australia that won the competition edging past the two Victorian sides for the ultimate prize.
In the under 12’s, state of origin rivalry was at its best as NSW and the ACT battled it out in their opening game of the championships. Two goals by H. Wenczel ensured NSW got over the line by 19 points.
Unfortunately NSW couldn’t come up with another victory as they finished the carnival in sixth place while ACT was close behind in seventh place.
Victoria was once again well represented with the state clinching first place in front of South Australia and Western Australia.
Overall the carnival was a great experience for the aspiring NSW and ACT footballers as they got a taste of life as professional players travelling as a team and playing in another state.
