Wollongong’s Auskicker of the Year
Little NAB AFL Auskicker Drewe Barrett will have something to remember for the rest of his life.
The six-year-old from Wollongong, who is a participant at the Wollongong Lions AFL Auskick Centre, has been selected as the Round 4 NAB AFL Auskicker of the Year nominee.
Drewe was chosen ahead of thousands of other entries based on his outstanding Auskick spirit.
As part of the award, he will be one of the budding AFL juniors to play during halftime of the Sydney Swans and Geelong match at the SCG this Saturday night.
He will also be interviewed by Neil Cordy on Network Ten which will be broadcast nationally, along with his football highlights.
In addition to this, Drewe will be one of the 22 Auskickers who will travel to Melbourne to march in the 2011 Toyota AFL Grand Final Parade, play on the MCG at halftime and present medals to this year’s premiership winning team.
Drewe is also in the running to win $5000 in a NAB Smart Junior Saver Account and Geelong’s vice-captain Joel Selwood as a footy mentor in 2012.
The Sydney Swans supporter was nominated for the award by his father, Wayne, who wrote in about his son’s enthusiastic Auskick spirit.
“Drewe has all the values that make a great Auskicker and eventually make a great AFL player. He is focused, passionate, considerate of other players and is crazy about the game. It is these traits that we try to nurture early on to ensure we develop kids that will represent AFL in the way it deserves. Drewe loves to be active and it would be validation of his love of the game to be a part of this amazing opportunity – he’d be in AFL heaven!! An amazing reward for an amazing kid.”
