Wagga Junior Umpire on the Rise

Please see below words written by SNSW Umpire Coordinator Troy Mavroudis.

Abdullah is a student at Kooringal High School in Wagga and enrolled in the School Based Umpire Academy I run in Term 1 2015 at the school. He showed real interest in umpiring and was very eager to get involved in umpiring in the Wagga District Junior Football League. He debuted Under 10’s after 3 weeks in the school academy. He re-enrolled in Term2 of the academy and has now moved up to Under 12’s level such is his enthusiasm, willingness to listen and improvement in knowledge of the laws of the game. He regularly put his hand up to umpire school football including Paul Kelly Cup and Tony Lockett Shield. His interest in umpiring these gala days has also assisted in his overall improvement over the course of this year. He currently also plays football for Wagga Swans which also gives him a good foundation for being able to read the play. He was rewarded with the trip to Canberra because of his willingness to self improve, attendance at training and his overall enjoyment for umpiring. He loved to experience on Saturday “being right in front of the grandstand” and he is looking forward to umpiring the rest of the year and maybe getting a final. He really is a great kid and what you see on the video is exactly what you see from Abdallah all the time. His parents accompanied him to Canberra on the weekend and are also excited by how much he has enjoyed his umpiring. Abdallah has a brother Abdirahman who is also eager to get involved in umpiring but has to wait until next year as he is only 12 years old….Exciting times ahead!
