Vale Brian Langton: 1948-2023

The AFL NSW/ACT football community is in mourning following the loss of The Honourable Brian Langton, who passed away on Monday, 16 October, aged 75.

Mr Langton had been an integral part of AFL Sydney’s tribunal for more than 15 years, serving much of this time as its Chair. He was also instrumental in setting up the inaugural AFL NSW/ACT Tribunal, chairing the Tribunal from its inception in 2020 before stepping down in 2023 due to his deteriorating health.

Days before his passing, Mr Langton was awarded AFL Sydney Life Membership, making him one of fewer than 60 people to hold the honour across the competition’s 120-year history. He was delighted with this accolade.

In addition to his time volunteering on the AFL Sydney and AFL NSW/ACT tribunals, Mr Langton was President of St George AFC Dragons in the early 2000s.

Away from footy, Mr Langton served as the mayor of Kogarah (1979-80) and the Member for Kogarah from 1983 to 1999. He volunteered at the Wayside Chapel, for Lifeline, Meals on Wheels and St Vincent de Paul. He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth, three daughters and seven grandchildren.

Mr Langton’s citation for his Life Membership of AFL Sydney reads:

Mr Brian Langton is granted AFL Sydney Life Membership for substantial contributions to AFL Sydney as a member and Chair of its tribunal over a period of 15 years. Mr Langton also chaired the AFL NSW/ACT Tribunal since its 2020 inception until 2023.

Through his almost two-decade tenure on the tribunal, Mr Langton has ushered in periods of significant structural change and an evolving scope of work to keep pace with the expectations of modern football and community standards. His advice and leadership ensured the tribunal system throughout AFL NSW/ACT is thorough, consistent and fair.
