Universities to meet for Chancellor’s Cup
By Matt Rossleigh
Sydney University will play UWS GIANTS on Saturday August 3 in the NEAFL Eastern Conference for the inaugural Chancellor’s Cup.
The clubs will meet at Blacktown International Sports Park with dignitaries from both universities in attendance.
Sydney University Football Club President Chas Wilkinson says the match is a great opportunity to promote the sport across both universities.
“I think it’s a fantastic opportunity for the AFL and the code as a whole to be prominent at Sydney University and UWS,” said Wilkinson.
“Having the involvement of both chancellors from the universities gives recognition to the sport of AFL on campus.
“At Sydney University we have a unique opportunity to play at this level and to study at the university and we also offer scholarships.”
The winning club will be presented with the Chancellor’s Cup at Skoda Stadium in the afternoon as GWS GIANTS plays Melbourne Demons in the AFL.
“For the two universities to be promoted at the AFL match it is great to have the connection with western Sydney,” said Wilkinson.
“The big win here is the opportunity to promote the sport of AFL through both universities.”
Sydney University sits two wins out of the top five and with the match to play in Round 20 there could be a finals spot on the line for the winner.
The GIANTS have had a partnership with the University of Western Sydney since the 2012 NEAFL season, with tailored membership packages and ticket offers available to students.
This partnership provides educational pathways for GWS GIANTS players to take further studies, whether at TAFE or university.
Sydney University joined NEAFL in 2012 from AFL Sydney, finishing 8th in its inaugural season and in 2013 has won three from its last four matches to sit in 7th.
