TPP collaborating with AFL Club Academies
After a successful year with 18 players making it onto AFL Club lists, the AFL NSW/ACT Talented Player Program is set to enhance the future of talented players from across NSW and the ACT. We are now entering an exciting phase for AFL in NSW and the ACT with new developments coming into place.
The AFL NSW/ACT Talented Player Program (TPP) is committed to providing talented players with the best opportunity to be drafted by an AFL club. We aim to enhance the pathway available for players, in conjunction with the new AFL Club Academies Model – which will provide talented players with direct access to an AFL Club.
The introduction of the AFL Club Academy Model has resulted in the TPP reviewing its activities, processes and structures. We have made changes to align with and ensure collaboration with both AFL Club Academies.
AFL NSW/ACT TPP CHANGES
As of November 1, 2010, TPP eligibility is now based on each player’s residential address. This is in accordance with the new AFL Clubs Academies Model which is also based on players’ place of residence. This means all participants in the TPP will try out for zone squads linked to their respective AFL Club Academy. For a detailed map of the new residential zoning please click here.
After reviewing TPP activities and considering recommendations from evidence based research into injury and player workloads, AFL NSW/ACT has determined it’s beneficial to player welfare to hand over responsibility of the Under-15 age group to the AFL Club Academies. Both AFL Club Academies will include an Under-15 age squad to participate in the Under-16 Joss State Zone Trials held in April.
The age group is still seen as an important age in the talent pathway and TPP staff will continue to monitor players through AFL Club Academies, school and local club programs. The AFL Club Academies will still have programs in this age group. Please note, Under-15 players will not be eligible to trial for the Under-16 TPP age group.
