Tigers’ Mayoral Encouragement Award
AFL NSW/ACT would like to congratulate the Auburn Tigers women’s team for being awarded the prestigious Auburn City Council Mayoral Encouragement Award last week.
The team has made national headlines this year for their outstanding ability to bring people from all different cultures and backgrounds together to play sport – some for the very first time.
The side is predominantly made up of local Muslim women who have had little to no contact with Australian football in the past – until this team was established.
Now, the Auburn women’s team is kicking goals with the side recently completing their first season in the Sydney Women’s AFL. They have a full playing list, a coach and a group of dedicated supporters.
The Auburn Tigers Club itself is also growing with two men’s teams, an Auskick centre (one of the largest in NSW) and more locals now giving AFL a go.
Auburn mayor Ronney Oueik congratulated the Tigers on their outstanding achievement.
“I am very pleased to award the first Auburn girls AFL team with the Mayoral Encouragement Award for their excellent team spirit,” Oueik said.
“These young women play for the Auburn Tigers and are from a range of cultural backgrounds. For many of them this is the first time they have participated in a team sport.
“There are many talented sports women and men playing a wide range of sports in our area.
“Sport is a fun, healthy and rewarding activity and this is something we want our community to become involved in.
“Local sporting clubs provide a wide range of active opportunities for people of all ages and abilities encouraging team spirit and personal fitness.”
