Sydney Swans pre-season wrap

Gaz’s grass run

Swans forward Gary Rohan achieved his New Year’s resolution this morning, when he ran outdoors for the first time since breaking his leg in round four last season.

Rohan, who has been confined to the treadmill for the last three months, ran laps of Lakeside Oval this morning and was greeted with plenty of encouragement from his Swans team mates, who returned to the track today after a two-week Christmas break.

Speaking to SwansTV after the session, the 21-year-old said he was pleased with his first outdoor running session in almost nine months.

“It was not too bad. My legs are a bit heavy at the moment but when I got into a rhythm I was fine,” Rohan said.

“It was a good start to the New Year and hopefully I can keep on going without any injuries and can get back.”

Richards and LRT sign on for 2014

Sydney Swans premiership players Ted Richards and Lewis Roberts-Thomson will remain in red and white until at least the end of 2014, with the pair signing new contract extensions.

Both Richards and Roberts-Thomson were contracted until the end of next season, but have now extended their deals by a further 12 months.

Sydney Swans General Manager – Football, Dean Moore, said it was fantastic for the Club to secure two senior premiership players.

“Both players were valuable members of the Swans premiership team, and it is exciting to have them on board for the 2013 and 2014 seasons.”

Swans’ numbers up

Sydney Swans fans will see guernsey number 31 back on the field for the red and white in 2013, with Swans draftee Harry Marsh set to don the number previously worn by former captain Brett Kirk.

Marsh, who was drafted from East Fremantle, told sydneyswans.com.au that Kirk was among his football idols growing up and he hoped to mirror his game on the Swans great.

Like Marsh, 18-year-old forward Tim Membrey said he has big shoes to fill when it comes to wearing his selection – the number one guernsey.

Membrey, who kicked 54 goals at TAC Cup level for the Gippsland Power and Vic Country in 2012, said he hoped to one day match the success of one of the club’s most famous forwards.

After 104 games in the number four guernsey at the Adelaide Crows, new recruit Kurt Tippett will wear the number eight guernsey at the Swans.
