Swans keen to continue unbeaten run
By James Matthey
Despite coming off Saturday’s 39-point win over North Melbourne, Swans co-captain Adam Goodes is adamant his side must improve if they want to compete against Geelong this Friday night at the SCG.
The victory, sparked by an 11-goal third quarter blitz, wasn’t entirely satisfying for Goodes, who said they could ill-afford another lacklustre half of football if they wanted to continue their undefeated start to 2013.
“I think on the weekend we played a good half, a half of footy that we wanted to play,” said Goodes.
“But that’s not going to happen every week and we don’t want it to happen every week where we just come out and play one good quarter of footy.
“We want to come out and play four consistent quarters and that’s what we’ll be looking to do against Geelong because that’s the only way we’ll be able to get the win on Friday night.”
The mercurial midfielder also said that the defending premiers would have to be on their guard against allowing the Cats to build any momentum, much like the Swans themselves did to the hapless Roos on Saturday afternoon.
“That’s one thing we definitely can’t allow is for a team to put four or five goals on us, especially a team like Geelong because once they get their tail up, as you saw on the weekend, they can run teams down and they can put scores on teams quite easily.
“They’re playing some good footy, they’re up and about, they’re moving the ball quite well through the middle of the ground which they’ve been able to do quite consistently for the last seven years.
“It’s a great challenge, but it’s our home deck and we’re up for that challenge and we’re going out there to get those four points,” said Goodes.
As two of only five teams yet to taste defeat in 2013, the Swans and the Cats will both be out to protect their unbeaten records when they clash at the SCG on Friday April 19, starting at 7:50pm.
