Strathfield Auskick a huge success
AFL NSW/ACT are proud to announce the completion of the very first after-school AFL program in the Strathfield area, paving the way for the sport to further increase its popularity in Sydney’s west.
In response to the need for more after-school programs in the Strathfield local government area, the AFL (NSW/ACT) in partnership with Strathfield Council and the Metro Migrant Resource Centre Community Hubs delivered an after-school NAB AFL Auskick program at Airey Park, Homebush.
The program which ran every Wednesdays in term 1 for 6 weeks provided boys and girls aged 5-12 the opportunity to develop fundamental motor skills as well as learning the game with other children in the community.
More than 90 per cent of the participants had never played AFL before, and the experience prompted three families to attend the inaugural Sydney derby between the Swans and the Giants played at ANZ Stadium.
Kevin Sing AFL NSW/ACT Multicultural Program Coordinator said the program helped to unite the community.
“The program was a great success and it was wonderful to see families and young children from diverse backgrounds coming together through this AFL program to play harmoniously with each other,” he said.
As a result of promoting the program through local schools and networks, a total of 60 participants from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds registered to take part. The result has prompted organisers to plan for a future program in the Strathfield local government area.
