One GIANT step for graduate Emad Elkheir
Emad was recently featured in the University’s recent publication explaining his current role at AFL NSW/ACT.
Emad is employed as the AFL NSW/ACT Multicultural Programs Coordinator for the Greater Western Sydney region, after completing a Bachelor of Health Science (PDHPE) and a Master of Secondary Teaching at UWS.
“I work closely with the GWS GIANTS to increase awareness and participation across multicultural communities,” Emad explains.
“This includes the coordination and delivery of a variety of community engagement programs for schools, juvenile justice and youth centres as well as coaches sessions, umpiring courses and leadership programs.”
His recent visit to the UWS Nirimba campus aimed to introduce current students to the AFL, help them learn about opportunities to participate in an AFL coaching course, and encourage them to upskill themselves and get involved with the sporting code.
Emad spoke to students about the benefits of the new programs, similar to those he himself participated in whilst at UWS.
“I spoke about my personal journey and the positive impact this had on me when I applied for a full time position.”
Being back on a UWS campus brought back a lot of find memories for Emad.
“The fact that I was in the exact same position not so long ago made it very rewarding. I still remember my days as a student,” says Emad.
“My time at UWS was a great experience. My courses offered a variety of practical and theoretical classes and assessment which made it interesting. I enjoyed the diverse environment and established a great network of friends that I still cherish today.”
In the future, Emad says he would like to establish and build strong relationships between AFL, the GIANTS and the University, where all can benefit from each other’s facilities and experiences.
“Personally I am also very interested in being involved in future tutorials and in a mentorship program with students who are going through University.”
