NSW/ACT Notebook: Round 20 Wrap

Sydney Swans 10.11 (71) def. by Collingwood 14.16 (100)

The Swans suffered an upset 29-point loss to the in-form Collingwood.

Kurt Tippett again kicked six goals but the Magpies’ star power was on full show, with Scott Pendlebury (35 disposals), Dayne Beams (32) and Dane Swan (31) all doing damage.

The Swans started strong with the opening four goals and a two-goal quarter time lead. After that, the Pies gradually took control of the contest.

The margin was three points at half time and 18 at the third break.

Swans coach John Longmire put the poor performance down to “work rate”. Although his side narrowly won the tackle count, that was perhaps helped by Collingwood having far more disposals (318-388).

The Pies also won the contested possessions (134-147) and contested marks (8-13).

Jarrad McVeigh did put in a super game with 35 disposals at 80 per cent efficiency with eight clearances. Nick Malceski was back to his usual output with 20 touches and 10 rebound 50s and Shane Mumford led the hitouts with 28.

Tippett’s performance brought his tally from the last two weeks to 12.2.

Fremantle 24.13 (157) def. GWS GIANTS 6.8 (44)

The GIANTS were handed a reality check by Fremantle, going down by 113 points.

Oddly given the final margin, the visitors actually dominated the second quarter. But for the rest of the match it was all the Dockers, who pounced on the opportunity to boost their percentage.

Freo started off with a six goals to none first term and resumed control after half time with seven goals in the third and nine in the last. They had 15 individual goal kickers.

The GIANTS did work hard on the defensive end, however, laying a club-record 107 tackles. The Dockers had just 60.

Callan Ward led the way for the GIANTS with 29 disposals and six clearances. Jeremy Cameron was again a force up forward with four goals.

For Freo, Aaron Sandilands and Zac Clarke dominated the ruck (hitouts were 52-23). Lachie Neale had 26 disposals and three goals. Michael Barlow had 27 disposals and one goal.
