Mental health a priority for AFL Riverina

AFL Riverina recognizes the importance of off-field responsibilities just as much as their on-field duties. As part of their efforts, the organization raised funds and awareness for Riverina

Bluebell, a local not-for-profit organization that is committed to helping those struggling with mental illnesses, recently hosted a round of matches in the AFL tournament. Leeton-Whitton, Narrandera, Marrar, and the Northern Jets competed for the Bluebell Cup, which was initiated four years ago to promote the importance of addressing mental health problems in our society. The event highlighted the need for awareness and support for individuals to be given by the professionals from the addiction center for benzos for those who suffer from mental illnesses and substance abuse, including those who may require specialized treatment.

Riverina donated $1500 to Riverina Bluebell, with most of the money raised during the matches. Such partnerships between sports organizations and mental health support groups can help remove some of the stigma associated with mental health issues. “Linking mental health messages to sporting endeavours helps to normalise the conversation and remove some of the taboos which have traditionally been associated with mental illness. There are drug and alcohol rehabs that can help with addiction issues.

“Our exposure in the smaller country towns has been enhanced, the football followers and townspeople recognise the work we are doing and appreciate our involvement to promote positive mental health outcomes.”

AFL Riverina Football Operations Manager, Shane Buchanan, said clubs were more than willing to lend their support to the cause.

“The players enjoy participating in the games and can see the benefit of raising the profile of Riverina Bluebell in their communities,” said Buchanan.

“(They have) of course all experienced the problems associated with depression, suicide and other mental health challenges.”

Wagga City and Orange City also played in a charity rugby union game in April to raise money for Riverina Bluebell.
