David Swallow and Jarrod Witts will again captain the Gold Coast SUNS for the 2020 Toyota AFL Premiership Season.

After both being appointed to the role for the first time in 2019, Swallow and Witts were unveiled as captains at the club’s official 2020 Season Launch this evening after leading the club impeccably on and off the field in 2019.

Witts, who won his first Club Champion after a stellar season on the field, said the experience he gained last year will only help him further develop his leadership style moving forwards.

“To be given the opportunity to lead this club again is something that I’m extremely grateful for and honoured to do,” Witts said.

“I really enjoyed the opportunity alongside Dave, I learnt a lot, I know he did and I know we’ll be able to use those learnings to make us better this season.

“Getting the exposure to it last year allowed me to understand a bit more about the footy club as a whole, you take on different responsibilities and then also have to focus on performing every week and being accountable to that as a leader of the footy club.

“I can’t wait to get stuck into the role and continuing to help drive this club forward.”

Swallow said the ability to work with and help teach the club’s playing group was one of the most exciting parts of 2019 and something he hoped to continue to develop.

“It’s extremely humbling to be appointed to the role again in 2020 and to be able to do it alongside Jarrod is special,“ Swallow said.

“Leading a group has its challenges, but it’s certainly been very rewarding at times and that’s one of the best parts of the role.

“Helping develop some of our younger players and drive the culture for our footy club is something I’m passionate about as a leader and really proud to do.

“If I can continue to work on my leadership style and help impart that across the group, I’ll feel as though I’m playing my role.”

GC SUNS General Manager Football Operations, Jon Haines, said the desire to improve and their love of the club and Gold Coast community really set an example for the group around them.

“David and Jarrod represent everything that we want this club to stand for. They are a credit to themselves and their family and we couldn’t be prouder of the people they are and how they lead our football club,” Haines said.
