Holy Family wins inter-school AFL-friendly
Holy Family School, Kelso has edged out a spirited St. Philomena’s team by two points in an inter-school friendly at Holy Family’s AFL field on Wednesday.
The two Bathurst schools went goal-for-goal the entire match with Holy Family eventually running out winners 5.5 (35) to 5.3 (33).
Both schools have been participating in Year 3-4 after-school programs during the past month. AFL (NSW/ACT) Development Manager Peter Yandle was pleased to bring the two schools together for the match.
“I have been umpiring games for the kids at both schools for a few weeks now and felt it would be great to utilise Holy Family’s new AFL field and bring the two schools together for a match. The smiles on all the kids faces was proof that this exercise has been a success.”
Holy Family girls’ team will also be hoping for the same success when they travel to Blacktown Olympic Park next Monday September 6 for the inaugural Paul Kelly Cup Girls’ State Final. The Boys’ Final will be played the following day and representing the Central West region will be Young Public School.
The AFL Paul Kelly Cup (James Hird/Glenn Archer Cups) is the largest AFL primary schools competition. In 2010 there were over 950 teams and more than 15 000 students participating from schools around New South Wales and the ACT.
