Heeney headed for greatness
By James Matthey
AFL supporters should prepare to hear the name Isaac Heeney a lot more in the years to come if he continues to show the promise that has earned him significant representative honours to date.
The 16-year old won the junior nomination for Maitland Sportsperson of the Year after his selection in both the QBE Sydney Swans Academy and the level one Australian Institute of Sport All-Australian squad.
Heeney is touted for a big future after impressing for the NSW/ACT RAMS in the recent Under-18 National Championships, and last year was awarded one of the inaugural Jim Stynes scholarships to help him make his AFL dreams a reality.
The on-baller earned his place in this year’s Under-18 state side after some outstanding performances during last year’s Under-16 National Championships in which he was deemed best-on-ground in all three matches.
Playing for the Cardiff Hawks in the Black Diamond AFL competition, Heeney is hoping to one day join his idols in a red and white jersey at the elite level.
Heeney receives a $50 voucher from Athlete’s Foot for being the monthly nominee for the Maitland Sportsperson of the Year Award, and if crowned the overall junior winner, will pick up $500 donated by PRD nationwide.
