Hannebery’s magnificent 17

“Honestly, I like playing in the midfield,” said Seb Hannebery the week following his 17-goal haul for the Bermagui Breakers. “I think everyone will be keen to see me play down forward now, but we’ll see what happens.”

The 24-year-old utility is the embodiment of local footy. He grew up in Bermagui, first getting involved in the club at Auskick and playing in AFL Sapphire Coast ever since (except for a couple of years he spent overseas).

As Hannebery’s grown older, he’s become one of the stars of the town. This wasn’t his first big haul – he snagged 14 goals in a match in 2022 – but the Round 1 display will build his legend.

“We lost our main forward structure,” he said, when asked about how he felt before the match. “A few of them went to a music festival and a few had other commitments. So I went to full forward and just asked them to kick it in front of me. They did and I kicked it pretty straight, which was good.

“I had some butterfingers for sure, I missed a few easy goals too…so I could have kicked a few more,” he said jokingly.

Hannebery estimates that he’s grown up with about 90 per cent of his team and says home games are what everyone looks forward to the most, with a big, rowdy crowd always turning up to support their Breakers.

We’re looking forward to keeping an eye on the Breakers and seeing if their acquiescent goal kicking machine can back up one of the greatest individual performances the league’s seen.
