GIANTS sweep academy series first leg
By Tony Salerno
The best NSW and ACT talent was on display at Ainslie Oval in Canberra on Saturday with the Slater and Gordon GIANTS academy victorious against the QBE Sydney Swans in Under-16 and Under-18 matches.
The Under-18s sides kicked off the morning action with both teams grinding through the first three quarters.
Five unanswered goals by the GIANTS in the final quarter made sure the Slater and Gordon Academy ran out 50-point winners.
The GIANTS’ 13 majors were made up of 10 individual goal scorers with the final score 13.13 (91) to 4.12 (36).
The Under-16s match was a closer encounter with the GIANTS Academy holding off the Swans 12.7 (79) to 10.7 (67).
Players were bolstered by the appearance of state scouts for the upcoming NSW/ACT Rams selection.
The fixtures were the first of two meetings between the two institutions, with the second set of academy- series fixtures to be held on May 11 at the SCG.
