Giant news for Griffith
In just over a month since the Greater Western Sydney Giants were officially named the AFL’s 18th club, the Giants are making headlines in Southern NSW with a local junior side in Griffith adopting their name.
The Griffith Giants will enter the South West Junior Football League next season, with three teams set to play in the under-11, under-13 and under-15 competitions. This means an additional 60 players will now get the opportunity to play AFL from the local area.
The GWS Giants have embraced the move with the club donating three sets of guernseys while AFL NSW/ACT has donated footballs, free coaching accreditation, playing shorts and socks.
AFL NSW/ACT State Manager – NSW/ACT Development Simon Laughton said it is fantastic to see the Giants’ name grow across the state and territory.
“One of the reasons why a club was established in Greater Western Sydney was to provide people with an opportunity to play AFL,” Laughton said.
“Not only have the Giants made considerable inroads already but the club is attracting new participants to the game from a variety of different backgrounds and the Griffith Giants is one example of that.
“The AFL is committed to growing the game further in NSW and the ACT and there is nothing better than seeing three new teams set up in Southern NSW under the banner of the Giants.”
The decision to enter three teams in the South West Junior Football League was decided last night at the Griffith Ex-Servicemen’s Club.
