Gentle GIANTS visit Westmead
By James Matthey
When so much attention is paid to the on-field exploits of elite AFL players in today’s game, it can be easy to forget that the work they do off the field is equally as important.
The GIANTS have certainly embraced their off-field duties, realising that their responsibility as an AFL club goes far beyond what happens inside the boundary line every weekend.
This was evident when co-captain Callan Ward, Jonathan Giles, Adam Treloar and Lachie Plowman gave the patients of Westmead Children’s Hospital a pleasant surprise as they arrived to hand out colouring-in books, footballs and furniture.
Lifebroker Gentle GIANTS ambassador Jonathan Giles said the players loved the opportunity to give something back to local communities.
“It’s great to get out and visit those who are doing it tough at the moment and try and put a smile on their face,” said Giles.
“The whole squad has been visiting schools and hospitals this week ahead of the bye and it’s been great spending time with GIANTS fans in the community.”
The GIANTS haven’t used their upcoming bye as an excuse to take things easy, visiting over 100 schools and junior clubs within the GIANTS zone over the last two days, travelling across western Sydney, Canberra and the Riverina.
The GIANTS players also spent time with patients in Westmead Hospital’s Adolescent Ward, advising teenagers with eating disorders about the benefits of living a healthy lifestyle.
Clinical Nurse Consultant of Adolescent Medicine at Westmead Hospital, Gail Anderson, said the players’ visit was an inspiration for both staff and patients.
“It’s wonderful that the players are able to take time out of their busy schedules to visit our patients and staff at the hospital,” said Ms. Anderson.
“Some of our patients really look up to these football players and see them as their idols, so to have them visit us and spend time with our patients is truly fabulous, and gives young adults hope and inspiration.”
