Future Stars on show in Sydney
AFL clubs may have recently signed NRL stars Israel Folau and Karmichael Hunt but the search continued for more players to pick up AFL in Sydney when the Future Stars Carnival was played at Macquarie University on Tuesday, September 28.
The event provided an opportunity for boys in grade five and six who do not currently play AFL with a local club to experience the game.
It was the ideal occasion for talented athletes to showcase their talents, especially with the Sydney Swans and Team GWS looking for players to become members of their Academy in the future.
Sydney Swans Academy Manager Chris Smith said the club will be looking at players from all sports to join their academy in the future.
“We’re expecting a large proportion of our Academy to be made up of players from alternative sports – it’s a priority for our Academy,” Smith said.
“We believe there is an enormous potential for talented young kids to adapt to AFL once placed in our Academy where there will be concentrated training schedules, elite facilities and coaches.
“Hopefully we can attract players with the necessary passion and dedication so they can fulfill their potential.”
In the end the ACT came away with the points defeating Sydney West by one point.
