Former Swan joins the GIANTS
Buchanan played 134 AFL games for Sydney and Brisbane over 11 years, including the 2005 premiership.
The 30-year old had his first taste of coaching this season working with the Sydney Swans Academy and being a playing assistant coach for the Sydney Hills Eagles in the NEAFL.
Buchanan was also an assistant coach for the NSW/ACT Rams in this year’s NAB AFL Under-16 and -18 Championships.
On top of his roles with junior footballers, Buchanan held part time positions with NRL clubs Parramatta Eels and Sydney Roosters as a catching coach, and also covered AFL games for the ABC providing special comments.
The acquisition of Buchanan comes shortly after it was announced Swans premiership ruckman Shane Mumford would join the GIANTS for the next three seasons.
Head Coach Leon Cameron says Buchanan will be a valuable addition to the GIANTS football department.
“To have someone of Amon’s experience join our coaching group is fantastic,” said Cameron.
“We have one of the youngest playing lists ever assembled and Amon will be working closely with this group to fast track their development.
“He’s been part of a winning culture at the Swans, enjoys living in Sydney and we can’t wait for him to start in this role.,” he said.
Buchanan says he’s looking forward to the role.
“I’m really excited to come on board at the GIANTS and to work under Leon Cameron in his first season as Head Coach.
“It’s a young club with a developing playing list which is going through a really exciting phase.
“There’s a lot of young talent at the GIANTS and I’m looking forward to the challenges that we’ll face over the coming years,” he said.
Buchanan will start his role with the GIANTS in November.
