There are four major football leagues in the Southern NSW region: Hume FNL, AFL Riverina, Northern Riverina and AFL Broken Hill.

There has been growth in participation of 3.23 per cent in Southern NSW this year – from 21,485 up to 22,178 participants. By the end of 2012 the region hopes to have 23,043 participants – an increase of 3.9 per cent.
- Wagga Wagga player Justin Ngudu was selected in the World AFL Team that played in the IEC Cup at Blacktown International Sportspark in 2011.

2011 saw the birth of a new club, the Griffith Giants and expansion to include two new age groups in the Wagga and Districts Junior Football League.

The MIA, a new Club and girls Auskick centre was formed in 2011, with over 50 participants in its inaugural year.

Eight players from Southern NSW were listed at the 2010 and 2011 primary and rookie drafts.

There are 22 players from Southern NSW who are currently on AFL lists.

More than 1540 local players participated in the Talented Player Program in 2011.

Southern NSW played host to the Round 3 2012 NAB Cup clash between the GWS GIANTS and the Gold Coast Suns, with the match being held at the Lavington Sports Ground in Albury.
