Competition kicks off in Central Coast

Now in their fourth round, four teams of ten girls are off to a flying start representing Peninsula, The Entrance-Bateau bay, Gosford and Killarney Vale.

Last Sunday, Peninsula beat Gosford while the Killarney Vale Bombers narrowly defeated The Entrance-Bateau Bay, 13.1.79 to 10.17.77 at Don Small Oval.

Central Coast AFL Regional Manager, Simon Smyth said the young girls are playing very competitive games with such little experience.

“They are playing fantastically,” he said.

“There have been a lot of close games however a strong level of teamwork remains between the players, which I am very proud to see.

“The core values of ladies football are participation, teamwork and enjoyment—our girls are doing very well in fostering that.”

Smyth expects 2013 to be a breakthrough year in the development of women’s football in the region.

“This is an exciting development in the Youth Girls journey,” he said.

“By having a youth girl’s competition in the region, the girls will have a great pathway to carry on playing and pursue a career in football.

“We hope that by 2020, the AFL will have an elite national women’s competition where we will be able to see our girls compete.”

This week, Gosford will take on The Entrance-Bateau Bay, at Adcock Park, and Peninsula will be playing Killarney Vale, at Paddy Clifton Oval.

The Youth Girls’ Championship consists of 15 rounds played on Sundays plus finals.

The grand final will be played on the 1st September, at 11:15am.

Venue is to be confirmed.
