Coffs set for financial boost
The 2011 AFL NSW/ACT Under-18 Joss State Zone Trials being held in Coffs Harbour from January 17 to 20 is expected to generate $250,000 for the local economy.
Over 200 players, coaches and staff will take part in the four-day event while family members will also make the trip north to accompany their children.
Coffs Harbour Mayor Councillor Keith Rhoades said the trials would be the first major sporting event for 2011 on the BCU International Stadium calendar.
“Not only will the economy receive a major boost by hosting the event, but there is every chance the visitors will fall in love with our great city and want to return again another day.
“We are expecting hotels to be booked, caterers to be busy and cafes and restaurants to be packed out, but most of all we are expecting all players and visitors to have a memorable stay while in Coffs Harbour,” he said.
Cr Rhoades said he would encourage everyone to bring their friends and family along to one, or all three days of the trials.
“With the amount of AFL talent coming through the state in recent years we all may just see the next superstar of the competition starting his career at the magnificent Coffs Harbour International Stadium.”
There will be plenty to play for during the trials with Under-18 NSW/ACT RAMS selection up for grabs for those who impress. The Sydney Swans and GWS Giants Academies will also use the trials to formulate their 2011 intake.
AFL NSW/ACT State Talent and Coaching Manager Darren Denneman said he is thankful for everyone’s support in Coffs Harbour.
“The Coffs Harbour City Council and the local community has been instrumental in allowing the AFL to hold the event in the city for another year. Without the support of all involved, the trials would simply not exist,” Denneman said.
“The AFL is delighted to continue their ongoing relationship with the city and we look forward to this continuing long into the future.”
The Joss State Zone Trials will commence on January 17 and conclude on January 20. Please note, Wednesday January 19 is a rest day. Matches will be played at the Coffs Harbour International Stadium from 4.30pm to 9.30pm. Please visit www.aflnswact.com.au for news and results from the Joss State Zone Trials.
