Balmain claim women’s premiership
Balmain Dockers have won back to back AFL Sydney women’s premierships by defeating Sydney University by 38 points at Henson Park on Saturday, 7.9 (51) to 2.1 (13).
Blustery conditions made it difficult for the players, however cheered on by a vocal crowd, they put on an excellent spectacle.
In a tight opening quarter, Balmain kicked the only goal for the term to lead by six points at the first change.
The second quarter was once again very even with Sydney University kicking two goals to Balmain’s one, with the Dockers just three points up at the half time break.
Scoring was at a premium at the beginning of the third quarter. Once Balmain were able to kick a major they were able to follow it up with four more quick goals to open up a commanding 25 point lead at the final change.
The Bombers were kicking with the aid of the breeze in the last quarter however try as they might, they were unable to make any inroads into the Dockers lead.
When the final siren rang a delighted Dockers outfit were duly crowned undefeated premiers.
For the Dockers, Belinda Pride was outstanding finishing with five goals and winning the Deborah Rogers Memorial Trophy as best on ground. She was ably supported by Karla Spilarewicz and Katharyna Kobzan.
Mai Nguyen, Libby Sadler and Merdith Gray were Sydney University’s best players.
