AFL Sydney Women’s preview – Round 11
Two important matches headline Round 11 of the AFL Sydney Women’s competition including the top-of-the-table clash between Balmain Dockers and Newtown Breakaways.
Balmain preserved their unbeaten record with a big win over last-placed Penrith last weekend. Belinda Pride continued her goal kicking exploits with thirteen goals.
Newtown have been similarly impressive in recent weeks and boast their own sharpshooter in Krystle Thompson, who kicked eight against Auburn last start. Georgia Verkuylen has been another consistent performer this year and will be another important player for the Breakaways
The Western Wolves and UNSW/ES will play off at the Village Green on Saturday. Both sides are looking to move up the ladder from fifth and sixth respectively.
The Wolves lost a thrilling encounter with Wollongong by seven points last weekend after a scoreless final quarter cruelled their chances of victory. By comparison UNSW/ES lost convincingly against Sydney University. The Stingrays will rely on Courtney Gum if they are to jump the Wolves both in this match, and on the ladder.
Wollongong Saints will host a twilight match against Southern Power at North Dalton Park. With Sydney University snapping at their heels, the Saints will look to maintain their winning form.
In the other matches this round, Sydney University will be favoured to overcome Penrith Ramettes, while Macquarie University can keep in touch with the top five with a win over Auburn.
