AFL Sydney – Round 1 preview
Sydney Hills Eagles would generally go into the first round of the AFL Sydney competition as unbackable favourites against Western Suburbs at home, but questions have been asked since the Eagles were promoted into the NEAFL ranks this year.
The Eagles have recruited strongly and Michael Sankey, who steps up to the head coaching role, is determined to see his side into another finals campaign as they aim for four straight Premier Division titles.
The will field a young side, with the majority of the squad under 23 years of age. James Dwyer and Dominic Killworth have impressed early on, and will be looking to improve throughout the year.
Western Suburbs have lost a number of key personnel after a disappointing ninth-placed finish in 2011. David Cusick and Dwain Watkins and Ryan Barrett have left the club, putting pressure on the younger players to step up and fill the void.
Stephen Hudson will captain the side in 2012, and Lyn Roehrig and Matt Eurell will be called on to demonstrate leadership from the front. Jarryd Polley is another highly favoured player, earmarked for a future leadership role.
The second featured match of the round is Sydney University hosting St George on Sunday afternoon.
Michael Higgins and Nick Barton will lead a side mixed with experience and young up-and-comers. Like the Eagles, their depth will be tested with their inclusion to the NEAFL Eastern Conference.
Conversely, St George have progressed during the off-season and seem to have the right mix of players under Terry Mudge.
The signing of Jason Saddington is a coup for the club and he will be important to their chances when he is available.
Besides Saddington, Stephen Wilsen keeps on going, and expect big contributions from Reuben Bajada who is returning from long-term injury.
