AFL 2020 Fixture Released

The AFL today released the fixture for the 2020 Toyota AFL Premiership Season.

After making their inaugural Grand Final this year, the GWS GIANTS are set for a big 2020 AFL Premiership season with a fan-friendly mix of big-name opponents and family-orientated time slots.

The GIANTS kick-off the season with a historic AFL/AFLW double-header at GIANTS Stadium against Geelong in Round 1, before returning to UNSW Canberra Oval for a Friday night blockbuster against the Western Bulldogs in Round 3.

The Sydney Swans will kick off their 2020 campaign with an away match against the Adelaide Crows at Adelaide Oval, before playing their first home game of the season against Essendon at the SCG.

The Swans will have four day games at home, six night games at home with the Round 23 match up against Hawthorn still yet to be officially scheduled.

AFL NSW/ACT KEY DATES:

Round 1 – GIANTS’ historic double-header

The GIANTS kick-off the season with a historic AFL/AFLW double-header at GIANTS Stadium against Geelong on Saturday, March 21 at 7.25pm.

Round 2 – Swans’ first home game at the SCG

The Sydney Swans will host their first home game of 2020 in Round 2 against Essendon at the SCG on Friday, March 27 at 7.50pm. Bombers forward Joe Daniher could line-up against Sydney for the first time since 2017. The 25-year-old was courted by the Swans in the back half of 2019 but they were unable to facilitate a trade with Essendon. The Bombers have failed to win at the SCG in their last seven attempts, dating back to 2009.

Round 3 – Canberra hosts Friday night football

Canberra will host Friday night football under lights at UNSW Canberra Oval as the GWS GIANTS host the Western Bulldogs on April 3rd at 7.50pm.

Round 4 – Swans’ captain Josh Kennedy to celebrate 250 milestone

The Sydney Swans host Carlton at the SCG on Sunday, April 12 at 1.10pm in what will be Swans’ captain Josh Kennedy’s 250th match.

Round 5 and Round 19 – Sydney Derby XIX and XX

The first Sydney Derby (XIX) will take place in Round 5 with the Sydney Swans hosting their cross-town rivals on Saturday, April 18 at 7.10pm at the SCG in what could be Luke Parker’s 200th match.

The second instalment of the Sydney Derby falls in a Saturday twilight match as the GWS GIANTS host the Sydney Swans at GIANTS Stadium in Round 19 on Saturday, July 25 at 5.10pm.

Round 7 – Grand Final Rematch

The rematch of the 2019 Toyota AFL Grand Final will be held on the Saturday, May 2 at 1.45pm as Richmond hosts the GWS GIANTS at the MCG.

Rounds 10 – Sir Doug Nicholls Round

Sir Doug Nicholls Round, a celebration of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture and contribution to Australian football commences with the Sydney Swans hosting the Geelong Cats in the Marn Grook match on Friday, May 22 at the SCG.

Round 14 – Thursday night football at the SCG

Thursday night football is held at the SCG for the first time in 2020 as the Sydney Swans host Collingwood in a blockbuster primetime match.

Round 20 – Third and final match in Canberra for 2020

UNSW Canberra Oval hosts its third and final match of the season as the GWS GIANTS host the Brisbane Lions on Saturday afternoon.
