CHAMPIONSHIPS: Under-17 Rams begin with a win

The Under-17 AFL NSW/ACT Rams have started their 2019 NAB AFL Under-17 Futures campaign with an impressive win over Queensland.

Played in less than ideal conditions in Southport, the Rams kept close to the home side in the first through Eastern Sydney’s Marco Rossmann, who missed two early shots in the wet, but made up for them with the Rams’ only goal for the quarter.

As the rain started to pour in the second term, so did the goals for the visitors. Yerong Creek’s Jack Driscoll led for the Rams with a terrific mark in difficult conditions, kicking truly, before Marist’s Sebastian Quirk landed another following a 50-metre penalty. In a low scoring match, the Rams would go into the sheds at half-time with a four-point lead.

Figtree’s Jackson Tikkeros took a shot and missed early in the third quarter, but would make up for it just minutes later as the Rams came steaming out of the break. Willoughby-Mosman’s Pierce Roseby would join the party with one of his own as the Rams stretched their lead in the third.

As with all wet weather footy, it would be hard for the Queenslanders to catch the Rams from here. Leeton’s Coopa Steele put the final nail in within the first minute of the last quarter, and the win was the Rams’ by 17 points.

The Rams will play Vic Country in their second and final match of the 2019 NAB AFL Under-17 Futures Series on August 11 at Ikon Park in Melbourne.
