As they prepare for just their second year in the AFL, the GIANTS membership now stands at 10,026, compared to 4,671 at the same time last year.
The announcement came as the club unveiled a new membership package, the Global GIANTS, for AFL fans around the world.
GIANTS Head Coach Kevin Sheedy said the club was on track to surpass its 2012 membership total of 10,241.
“I want to thank all our fans who have shown their support for the club. This is a fantastic start and let’s now see if we can get 15,000-20,000 members,” Sheedy said.
It also means Sheedy has avoided wearing red and gold budgie smugglers on Sydney beaches after he laid down the challenge to the Suns to see which club would be the first to top 10,000 members.
SUNS Coach Guy McKenna gladly accepted, with the losing coach agreeing to wear the other club’s coloured budgie smugglers on their local beach.
The Suns membership currently stands at 8,632 meaning McKenna will have to don the orange GIANTS budgie smugglers.
“I had been training hard just in case I had to squeeze into a pair but I’m glad Bluey will be wearing them for more reasons than one. I’m also sure that SUNS fans will continue to get behind their club and support what are exciting times for our game in Queensland and NSW,” Sheedy said.
Priced at just $50, the Global GIANTS offers fans around the world access to exclusive content and a chance to be part of the AFL’s newest club.
“The GIANTS want to be a big club that leaves its footprint across the world. We know the popularity of our game is growing overseas and there are AFL fans across the world who want to be part of the GIANTS,” Sheedy said.
“We now have the South East London GIANTS, the North Leinster GIANTS (Ireland), the Zaprude GIANTS (Croatia) and the Skane GIANTS (Sweden) in Europe alone and we want to build a big membership base not just across Western Sydney and Canberra but right across Australia and the world.”
