Teams announced for Youth Girls Northern Academy Series
The AFL NSW/ACT Youth Girls Academy players will travel to Coffs Harbour this weekend to compete in the Youth Girls Northern Academy Series.
Split into two sides based on the regions in which they live, the players will contest as either the Sydney Swans or GWS GIANTS.
Taking on the Brisbane Lions and Gold Coast Suns Academies, the Series will be used by coaches to determine the final state squad for the upcoming match against Tasmania in early June.
AFL NSW/ACT Youth Girls Head Coach, Alicia Eva says she is looking forward to watching on as the two teams battle their Queensland counterparts.
“This weekend provides an opportunity for the girls to come together for the fourth time – albeit in two teams – and test themselves against the best talent in Queensland,” says Eva.
“From camp one in Sydney to camp three in Canberra, we saw how much the girls have developed in such a short period of time, so this Northern Academy Series is the next step up.
“We will be selecting the state squad from these games. Hopefully that is a tough task, because if it is, it means the girls are putting in the work and we as coaches are doing our jobs.”
State Youth Girls Assistant Coaches, Rachel Terlich and Nicola Barr will coach the GWS GIANTS and Sydney Swans sides respectively, while AFL NSW/ACT Talent staff and Eva will watch on from the stands.
“The weekend also provides some of our developing coaches in Nic Barr and Rachel Terlich the opportunity to head up a team, and continue to build on their coaching skill sets.
With 45 Under 18-year-olds from the New South Wales and ACT region travelling for the Series there will be plenty of players vying for a state squad call up.
“Zoe Hurrell was great in the Canberra trial games, as well as Brea Quinlivan and Breanna Tarrant. I am looking forward to sitting upstairs and observing who else puts their hand up for selection.”
