AFL NSW/ACT Schools Cup State Finals this Monday

The AFL NSW/ACT Schools Cup  State Finals will get underway on Monday in Canberra.

Formerly known as the Under-15 Swans Cup or GIANTS Cup (region dependent), the re-branded Schools Cup invites players from Years 7 and 8 to represent their school for ultimate footy bragging rights. The Schools Cup has been remodelled to ensure a pathway following the Paul Kelly Cup – Australia’s largest AFL primary schools competition. With the Paul Kelly Cup open to Years 5 and 6, the Schools Cup will provide the next step in the youth AFL schools journey.

Teams will travel from across the state and territory to be a part of the event set to be held at UNSW Canberra Oval, the Canberra home of the GWS GIANTS.

AFL NSW/ACT Programs Operations Lead, Adriana Harpas says she is eager to meet a raft of talented players from around the region.

“We are really excited to get the first official AFL NSW/ACT Schools Cup underway in Canberra,” says Harpas.

“To have teams travelling from as far north as MacKillop College (Port Macquarie) and as far south as Lumen Christi Catholic College (Pambula), is a great testament to the growth of school footy within New South Wales and the ACT.

“We wish all the schools participating the very best of luck, and look forward to seeing what the players can do as they showcase their talents on the big stage.”

Charlie Maskell from Lyneham High School has been named as one of the players to watch in the boys’ competition. Charlie plays for Ainslie Football Club in the AFL Canberra Under-14 competition. Charlie possesses incredible athletic ability and is a powerful, fast and versatile player, able to play as a ruck, key position player or on-baller. Charlie has a prodigiously long kick for a 14-year-old as he regularly kicks the ball 50 metres or more. He was the best on ground in the ACT Schools Cup Finals and is also an outstanding track athlete, breaking multiple school records at his school’s athletics carnival.

Lambton High School’s Brinley Gentle has also been named as a player to keep an eye on in the girls’ competition. Brin is a dynamic forward and midfielder, who leads by example through her energy and two-way running, which drives her team into attack. An excellent shot at goal, Brin is never afraid to take responsibility to make things happen for her team, always providing an option or setting up the winning play.
